Columbia's Trusted Family-Owned Hardwood Flooring Company
Floors are in our blood. Refinish My Floors is a family business, and our family has been working with hardwood for more than 30 years. Erlin, the owner, grew up in the trade, learned it from his father and brother, and still stands behind every job we take on.
We bring that same care to homes in Columbia and across Howard County. Whether you want to bring tired oak back to life, change the color of your floors, or install something brand new, we will walk you through your options in plain English, give you an honest estimate, and do the work the right way.
We are Bona Sand & Finish certified, American Sanders certified, and proud members of the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA). And we back our work with a simple promise: if something is not done right, the owner comes back and fixes it.
Hardwood Floor Refinishing in Columbia, MD
Refinishing is the best way to make an older floor look new again without the cost and mess of replacing it. Sanding takes off the worn finish and the surface scratches, then fresh stain and finish bring back the color, depth and protection your floor needs. Most Columbia homes can be finished in two to three days.
How a typical refinishing project works
- 1
Free estimate. We look at your floors (or review photos), talk through what you want, and give you a clear, honest quote.
- 2
Prep. We protect your home, cover vents and doorways, and go over what to expect before we start.
- 3
Dustless sanding. We sand the floor down to fresh, clean wood using dust-contained equipment.
- 4
Repairs and color. We fix what can be fixed, then apply your chosen stain or leave the wood natural. Custom color matching is available.
- 5
Finish coats. We apply your finish of choice, such as Bona Nordic Seal or polyurethane.
- 6
Final walkthrough. We go over the floor with you and review care instructions.
Typical timeline: Most projects take 2 to 3 days. Larger homes or added work like stairs may take a little longer, and we will tell you up front. We recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours after the finish goes down before moving furniture back.
Dustless Sanding for Cleaner, Healthier Homes
Anyone who has lived through a traditional floor sanding knows the fine dust that ends up on everything. We do it differently. Our dustless sanding systems capture dust at the machine and pull it away, so far less of it ever reaches the air in your home. The systems we use are Bona and Greenguard certified for indoor air quality.
- Much less dust on your furniture, shelves, vents and belongings
- A cleaner, easier job site for your family, including kids and pets
- Less cleanup when we are done
- A healthier home during and after the project
Dustless does not mean magic, and we will always be honest about what to expect. But it is a real difference you will notice.
Engineered Hardwood Refinishing: What's Possible
Yes, many engineered hardwood floors can be refinished. The key is the wear layer, the real wood veneer on top of the plank. That layer is what we sand, so how thick it is decides how much work the floor can take.
- We look at the plank edge or a transition piece to judge the wear layer thickness.
- We check the condition of the surface: scratches, wear, dullness or old finish.
- We tell you honestly whether a light screen-and-recoat, a full sand, or a different solution is the right call.
If the wear layer is thick enough, engineered floors can take a new stain and finish and look completely different. If it is too thin, we will tell you before we touch it, so you never pay for something that is not a good idea. This is also how we handled one recent Columbia project, where new engineered planks were installed, sanded, stained dark and finished (see the gallery below).
Finish Options: Bona Nordic Seal, Natural and Amber Polyurethane
The finish you choose changes how your floor looks, feels and wears. Here is a simple side-by-side. We will help you pick based on your home, your lifestyle and the look you want.
Bona Nordic Seal
Look: Light, natural, raw-wood appearance. Keeps the wood close to its true color.
Best for: Homeowners who want a bright, modern, natural feel.
Durability: Protective finish suited to everyday family living.
Cure and care: We will give you exact care and cure instructions at the walkthrough. Wait 24 to 48 hours before moving furniture back.
Polyurethane (amber tone)
Look: Warm, rich, amber glow that deepens the natural tones of the wood.
Best for: Homeowners who want classic warmth and traditional character.
Durability: Hard-wearing, protective finish with a long track record.
Cure and care: We will give you exact care and cure instructions at the walkthrough. Wait 24 to 48 hours before moving furniture back.
Not sure which one? Tell us the look you imagine, and we will show you samples on your own wood. Seeing it on your actual floor beats any picture. We also offer custom stain colors and color matching, so you are not limited to a catalog.
Stair and Handrail Refinishing
Stairs are often the first thing guests see, and the first place a tired finish shows. We refinish hardwood stairs and handrails so they match your floors, or give them a fresh look of their own.
- Sand treads, risers and handrails
- Match or contrast your main-floor color
- Apply a durable finish that stands up to daily foot traffic
- Work carefully around balusters and railings, including iron
Stair work takes patience and detail, and it is one of the things we are most proud of. One recent Columbia project paired black iron balusters with a light, natural raw-wood finish. Another used amber polyurethane for a warm glow from the stairs through the living room. Both are in the gallery below. Learn more about stairs and handrails.

Columbia Hardwood Flooring FAQs
How much does it cost to refinish hardwood floors in Columbia?
Every floor is different, so we quote each project individually rather than guess. The price depends on the size of the area, the condition of the wood, whether you want a new stain color, the finish you choose, and extras like stairs or repairs. The fastest way to get a real number is a free estimate. Send us a few photos or invite us over, and we will give you a clear, honest quote.
How long does refinishing take, and when can I move furniture back?
Most hardwood refinishing projects take two to three days, though larger homes or added work like stairs can take a bit longer. We will give you a timeline up front. As a rule, we recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours after the final coat of finish before bringing furniture back. We will go over exactly how to care for your new floor at the final walkthrough.
Can engineered hardwood be refinished?
Often, yes. It depends on the wear layer, which is the real wood veneer on top of the plank. If that layer is thick enough, we can sand it, restain it and refinish it just like solid hardwood. If it is too thin, sanding could do damage, and we will tell you honestly before starting. We check the plank edge and the surface condition during your free estimate.
What is dustless sanding?
Dustless sanding uses sanding machines connected to powerful vacuum systems that capture dust right at the source. Instead of fine dust floating through your home, most of it is pulled away as we work. The result is a much cleaner job site, less cleanup, and a healthier experience for your family. The systems we use are Bona and Greenguard certified for indoor air quality.
What is the difference between Bona Nordic Seal and amber polyurethane?
It comes down to look. Bona Nordic Seal gives a light, natural, raw-wood appearance that keeps the wood close to its true color. Amber polyurethane adds a warm, golden glow that makes the grain feel richer and deeper. Both are protective, long-lasting finishes. We will show you samples on your own wood, so you can choose the one that feels right for your home.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Refinish My Floors, LLC is licensed by the Maryland Home Improvement Commission under MHIC #137004, and we carry $1 million in liability insurance. We are also Bona Sand & Finish certified, American Sanders certified, and members of the National Wood Flooring Association.
