- Pet stains and odors. Dark spots that have soaked into the wood are often removed by sanding. If they go deeper, we replace the affected boards and match the color.
- Scratches and gouges. Light scratches are handled by refinishing. Deeper damage can be filled or the board replaced. See how we repair scratched wood floors.
- Gaps between boards. Seasonal gaps are normal, but large gaps need the right fix. We do not recommend wood putty for wide gaps; see why, and our guide to preventing gaps.
- Cupping and crowning. Boards that curl at the edges or peak in the middle point to a moisture problem that must be fixed first. See cupping repair.
- Water damage. We assess water-damaged floors and tell you what can be saved. See water damage repair.
- Termite and insect damage. Damaged boards are removed and replaced, and we recommend a pest professional for the source.
- Damage from poor installation or sanding. We correct uneven sanding, lippage and bad stain jobs from other contractors.

Common Hardwood Floor Repairs
Repair, Refinish or Replace?
The right answer depends on how deep the damage goes and how much of the floor is affected.
- Repair when the problem is limited to a few boards or one area.
- Refinish when the whole floor is worn, dull or scratched but the boards themselves are sound. See sanding and refinishing.
- Replace when boards are structurally damaged, badly cupped or buckled, or the floor has been sanded too many times. See refinish or replace.
How We Make a Repair Disappear
- Diagnose the cause. Moisture, pets, pests or poor installation each need a different fix.
- Remove and replace only what must go, using matching species and width.
- Blend the repair by sanding the whole area and matching stain color board by board.
- Finish with the same product as the rest of the floor so the sheen matches.
What Repairs Cost
Repair cost depends on the number of boards, the species, and whether a surrounding area also needs to be refinished so the repair blends. Many repairs are completed as part of a refinishing project, which is usually the most cost-effective way to get an invisible result. Send us photos at (240) 277-5953 and we will give you a clear estimate. For refinishing pricing, see our cost guide.
